Claude Code just did something that might be the final nail in the coffin for OpenClaw.
I’m talking about Claude Code Remote. And from what I can tell, this feature was built to compete directly with OpenClaw. Anthropic already set the foundation. They have plenty of users. Most people were trying to stack Claude Code as the main AI engine for OpenClaw anyway.
Here’s the kicker. Anthropic banned the use of regular Claude Code subscriptions on OpenClaw. That tells me everything I need to know. Claude Code Remote will eventually replace OpenClaw for most users. I’ve already shared my full take on why OpenClaw isn’t hitting the way people expected. But today we’re going hands-on.
I want to show you how to set this feature up. I want to show you the capabilities. And I want to lay out some honest pros and cons so you can make the final judgment call on what you’re using long term.
What Is Claude Code Remote?
Claude Code Remote lets you control your Claude Code terminal sessions from your phone. That’s right. Your phone. You boot up a session on your computer, open the Claude app on your phone, and you’re inside the same session.
Every custom skill you’ve built. Every MCP connection. Every agentic workflow. All accessible from your pocket.
Think about that for a second. Compare it to the complexity of setting up OpenClaw with its security concerns and configuration headaches. Claude Code Remote gives you the same result with almost zero friction.
I’m Charles Dove, and I run Charlie Automates on YouTube where I put out two videos a week on Claude Code workflows and templates. This is the kind of feature that gets me genuinely excited. Let me walk you through exactly how to set it up.
How to Set Up Claude Code Remote (Step by Step)
The setup is stupid simple. All you need is a Claude Code Max plan. Here’s what I did.
Step 1: Update Claude Code
Open your terminal and update Claude Code to the newest version. You need the latest build to get access to the Remote feature.
Step 2: Enable Remote in Config
Type /config inside Claude Code. Scroll down until you see “enable remote control for all sessions.” Mark it as true.
You don’t need to always leave it as true. But to get things running for the first time, flip it on.
Step 3: Boot a Session
Next time you open Claude Code, you’ll see “remote control is active” right in your terminal. That’s your confirmation.
Step 4: Download the Claude App
Download the Claude app on your phone. Log in with the same account that’s connected in your terminal. You’ll see your active sessions pop up immediately.
Click into one. You’re now inside the same exact session that’s running on your computer.
That’s it. Four steps. No Docker containers. No SSH tunnels. No open-source repos to clone and debug. Just your existing Claude Code Max subscription doing what it was built to do.
Real Demo: Running Agentic Workflows From My Phone
Let me show you what this actually looks like in practice.
I sent a prompt from my phone to use the Trello MCP and update my real estate board. Here’s a property I hadn’t comped yet. I have a whole real estate workflow built into Claude Code.
From my phone, I told Claude to research the property, connect to Zillow via browser automation, grab all the details, run a comp analysis with three recently sold properties, and update my Trello board with the results.
I didn’t touch my computer once. The workflow did everything. It opened my browser. It pulled property data from Zillow. It used a sub-agent to run the comp analysis. It updated the Trello card with the full report.
All of this happened because I typed a prompt on my phone while I could’ve been sitting at a coffee shop.
The more I build these workflows, the more ways I can think about automating my business. And now I can trigger all of them from my pocket. That’s the whole point.
Claude Code Remote vs. OpenClaw: The Real Comparison
Let’s get into the honest comparison. Both tools achieve the same core promise. MCP usage. Agentic workflows. Custom instructions via markdown files. Different AI brains you can connect.
At the foundation, they do the same thing. But the details matter.
Where Claude Code Remote Wins
Safety and oversight. Everything is housed and controlled by Anthropic. You pay a monthly subscription to a company that has a security team, documentation, and accountability. You’re not pulling open-source code to control your entire digital life with zero oversight.
OpenClaw is open source. That means there’s no administration sitting at the top making sure things work correctly. Unless OpenAI steps in and takes more control (which I could see happening), you’re on your own.
With Anthropic running the show, it’s plug-and-play. Here’s the documentation. Here’s how it works. Here’s what to do if something breaks. That’s a huge win.
Simplicity of setup. I walked you through the setup above. Four steps. Compare that to OpenClaw’s installation process with its dependencies, configurations, and troubleshooting rabbit holes.
No fear of getting banned. You’re using your pre-existing Claude Code Max subscription the way Anthropic intended. No gray areas. No terms-of-service violations. No waking up one morning to find your account suspended.
Your existing workflows just work. All your custom skills, MCP connections, and agentic workflows are already there. GoHighLevel CRM connections, NotebookLM, ElevenLabs, Trello. Everything you’ve already built carries over without any migration.
Where OpenClaw Still Has an Edge
Multiple AI models. OpenClaw lets you use any AI model. GPT-4, Gemini, local models, whatever you want. Claude Code Remote only works with Anthropic models right now. Opus, Sonnet, and the rest of the Claude family.
Could you probably hack Remote to work with other models? Maybe. But out of the box, it’s Claude only. OpenClaw gives you that flexibility natively.
Open source customization. Since OpenClaw is open source, you can modify anything. Fork it. Rebuild the UI. Add custom features. If you’re a developer who wants full control over the codebase, that’s genuinely valuable.
My Verdict
The pros reside heavily in favor of Claude Code Remote right now. That’s my honest take. Things might change. OpenClaw could improve. But at this current moment, I don’t see many reasons to choose OpenClaw over Remote unless you specifically need multi-model support or deep open-source customization.
The Bigger Picture: What This Means for AI Workflows
Let me zoom out for a second. CC Strategic, the AI automation agency I run with my partner Chris, builds systems for businesses that want to stop doing repetitive work. That’s our whole thing.
Claude Code Remote fits perfectly into that philosophy. The whole idea behind what we build is autonomy. Systems should start, run, and finish without constant intervention. If a human has to babysit it, it’s not real automation.
With Remote, I can boot up a few terminal sessions before I leave the house. Leave my computer on. And run full agentic workflows from my phone while I’m out living my life. That’s not a theoretical future state. That’s happening right now.
The more workflows you build inside Claude Code, the more powerful Remote becomes. Every skill you create. Every MCP you connect. Every markdown file you write to train Claude’s behavior. All of it becomes mobile.
The One Current Drawback
I want to be straight with you. There’s one limitation right now that’s worth knowing about.
You have to activate the terminal session from your computer first. You can’t cold-start a session from your phone. You need to boot Claude Code on your machine, then connect from your phone.
If you know you’re heading out, just open a couple sessions before you leave. Leave your computer on. Problem solved. It’s a small friction point that Anthropic will probably fix soon, but it exists today.
Should You Make the Switch?
Here’s my advice. Think for yourself. Think logically and pragmatically.
If you’re already using Claude Code with a Max subscription, enabling Remote is a no-brainer. It costs nothing extra. It takes five minutes to set up. And it gives you mobile access to everything you’ve built.
If you’re using OpenClaw and it’s working for you, don’t panic. But keep an eye on where things are heading. Anthropic banning their subscriptions on OpenClaw was a signal. Claude Code Remote launching was the follow-through.
And if you don’t fully understand what you’re connecting to these tools, do your research first. Don’t connect your wallet or anything sensitive to any of these platforms without understanding the security implications. That goes for OpenClaw and Claude Code Remote alike.

FAQ
What do I need to use Claude Code Remote?
You need a Claude Code Max subscription and the Claude app on your phone. That’s it. No additional software, no API keys, no Docker setup.
Is Claude Code Remote free?
It’s included with your Claude Code Max plan. No extra charge. You’re already paying for the subscription, and Remote is just a feature toggle.
Can I use Claude Code Remote with AI models other than Claude?
Not right now. Remote only works with Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet. If you need multi-model support, OpenClaw still offers that.
Is Claude Code Remote more secure than OpenClaw?
In my opinion, yes. Everything runs through Anthropic’s infrastructure with their security team behind it. OpenClaw is open source with no centralized oversight, which means you’re responsible for your own security.
Can I start a Claude Code session from my phone?
Not yet. You need to boot the session from your computer first, then connect from your phone. This is the one current limitation.
Do my MCP connections work through Remote?
Yes. All your MCP connections carry over. Trello, GoHighLevel, ElevenLabs, NotebookLM. Whatever you’ve configured in your Claude Code setup will be accessible from your phone.
What happened between Anthropic and OpenClaw?
Anthropic banned the use of regular Claude Code subscriptions on OpenClaw. This effectively forced OpenClaw users to find alternative AI models or use API credits. It was a clear competitive move that signaled Anthropic’s intent to own the remote AI workflow space.
Should I stop using OpenClaw?
That’s your call. If OpenClaw is working for you and you need multi-model support, keep using it. But if you’re primarily a Claude Code user, Remote gives you the same mobile workflow capability with better security and simpler setup.
What kind of workflows can I run from my phone?
Anything you’ve built in Claude Code. Browser automation, CRM updates, content generation, property analysis, data research. If it runs in your terminal, it runs from your phone through Remote.
