216 emails cost me 1 cent with Jev and $4.73 with Opus. Same task, same four questions, and Jev did it about 408 times cheaper. (That’s a cost gap at API prices, not a token count.)

I’m Charles J Dove, I run Charlie Automates, and I run this exact email triage every morning. Here’s the live test, what Jev AI really is, and how to install the Claude x Jev skill (one of the Claude skills worth adding) so it saves your usage window.

What Is Jev AI?

Jev is a model that sorts and classifies information. It isn’t a chat model like Claude where you ask a question and talk it through. It does three things:

  1. Picks this or that.
  2. Decides if something is true or not.
  3. Ranks its answer on a confidence scale.

Because it only does those three things, its output is fixed to the same size every time. That’s why it’s faster and cheaper than Opus. Think of it as a great cheap first pass over a lot of information.

My shorthand from the test: Jev is the bouncer, Claude is the manager. The bouncer takes a list of choices, picks one and tells you how sure it is. The manager reads the whole thing, thinks about it and writes the reply.

How Did Jev Compare to Opus on 216 Emails?

I ran both models through my collab check skill, which triages emails for sponsorships and collaborations. They answered four questions per email: what kind of email is it, what do they say about money, what do they want made, and do they plan to pay me.

I ran Claude in one session and Jev through an OpenRouter MCP API in a second, and pinged between the two sessions using BASE.

MetricJevOpus
Time per email0.3 seconds1.3 seconds
All 216 emails65 seconds37 seconds (9 batches at once) or 4 min 46 sec (batches in sequence)
Tokensabout 277,000 input, output free625,000 input, 24,000 output
Cost1 cent$4.73

On this use case Jev was about 4 times faster than Opus run in sequence, and 408 times cheaper. I compare at API prices, but on a Claude subscription the real cost is your 5-hour usage window and your context. Jev touched neither.

Did Jev and Opus Agree?

Most of the time. Agreement by question:

  • 87% on what kind of email
  • 88% on the money
  • 94% on what they want made
  • 74% on whether they’ll pay me

Agreement isn’t the same as being right, so Claude read the 28 emails they fought over. 13 were newsletters, 8 were affiliate-only offers, 4 were ones where Jev was right and Claude wasn’t, and 3 were unclear or spam.

There was no clear accuracy winner. Jev misses nuance. Claude sees deals that aren’t there. Someone invited me to a Friday debate on AI safety with no money discussed, and Claude called it a brand deal. Jev just said no. And Jev knows when it’s unsure, which is the whole trick: trust the sure answers, hand the unsure ones to Claude.

How Do You Run Jev and Claude Together?

Jev sorts, Claude thinks and writes. My flow:

  1. My Google Workspace CLI pulls the emails.
  2. Jev sorts all of them in parallel with the four questions, returning labels and confidence scores.
  3. The emails split by confidence.
  4. Claude reads only the unsure ones (38 of the 216), and I give the final say.

The combined cost was 85 cents against $4.73. I run this every day, so that adds up fast.

Where Does Jev Fall Short?

Jev doesn’t write. No drafts, no replies. It takes things literally, which is sometimes good. Its answers can contradict themselves, which is why Claude handles the unsure ones. It has no memory (that’s what BASE and Claude are for), and it doesn’t read a full skill playbook. It’s a front-end triage step, and it’s standalone through the API, so the skill includes a script to call it alongside skills you already have.

How Do You Add This to Your Claude Skills?

  1. Grab the install command from the Claude x Jev resource page.
  2. Open a new terminal, paste the command and hit enter. It opens a Claude session.
  3. Run the Jev setup command.
  4. Put a couple of dollars into OpenRouter and create an API key (I use no expiration). Add it to your ENV file, or give it to Claude.

You’ll see the Jev commands in Claude. They work standalone, but I’d use them through skills. I ran Skillsmith to audit my collab check skill and make Jev responsible for the first pass of the email triage, with Claude thinking and reading the results. Everything else stays the same. For a related way to cut usage, see my post on the plugin that cut my Claude tokens in half.

Key Takeaways

  • Jev is a classifier, not a chat model. It picks, judges true or false, and scores confidence.
  • 216 emails: 1 cent versus $4.73, about 408 times cheaper at API prices.
  • About 4 times faster than Opus run one batch after another.
  • Agreement: 87% on type, 88% on money, 94% on what they want, 74% on will they pay.
  • Best setup: Jev sorts, Claude reviews only the unsure ones (38 of 216).
  • Combined cost: 85 cents instead of $4.73.
  • Real savings show up in your Claude usage window and context.

FAQ

What is Jev AI? Jev is a model that sorts and classifies information. It picks between options, judges true or false, and gives a confidence score. It doesn’t chat or write.

Is Jev really 400 times cheaper than Claude? In my test, yes on cost. 216 emails cost 1 cent with Jev against $4.73 with Opus at API prices, about 408 times cheaper. It’s a cost comparison, not a token count.

Is Jev as accurate as Opus? They agreed 74% to 94% of the time depending on the question. Jev misses nuance and Claude sometimes sees deals that aren’t there, so I let Jev handle confident answers and send the unsure ones to Claude.

What do I need to run the Claude x Jev skill? Claude Code, the skill installed from the resource page, and an OpenRouter API key with a couple of dollars of credit.

Can Jev replace Claude? No. Jev can’t write drafts or replies and has no memory. Use it as the first pass and keep Claude as the thinker and writer.
